Unbeatable deals on first-time insurance policies

At Mastercover we know that when you’ve passed your test you just want to get out on the road, but sometimes pricey premiums or costly insurance policies can prove an obstacle to your driving. We work to make your first insurance policy more affordable by comparing policies from the UK’s top insurers. It is worth noting that many insurers consider more than just the price of your car and the area you live in; indeed, more and more insurers are now examining your driving habits before offering a quotation, so you need to be sure that you’re driving safely and correctly at all times.

Tips for cheaper car insurance

There are many ways for young drivers to reduce the price of their car insurance:

  • Purchase a car that is in a low band for insurance – remember that older is not always necessarily better as many insurers view newer cars as safer, more secure options.
  • Do your research and get a  quote on your insurance before you purchase your car to avoid any nasty surprises.
  • Add a parent or guardian onto your policy as many insurers offer lower quotations for policies including an experienced parent driver.
  • Consider a telematics policy which tracks your driving, rewarding good driving. This is a good way to make sure you are a safe driver as many of these policies offer an online dashboard with an overview of how you’ve been driving. These policies also make your vehicle easier to find in case of theft.
  • Get a Black Box policy that provides cover based on how many miles you drive, and also on how well you drive.

What is Black Box Insurance?

  • Black Box Insurance: Having a black box fitted to your car can reduce the cost of your insurance by up to 60%.
  • Theft Tracking: If your vehicle is stolen and you have a black box fitted to your car, your insurers can locate the vehicle.
  • Safer Driving: You’ll get access to your dashboard which shows your driving score, so you can check how you have been driving.
  • Extra Discounts: Get a mileage-based policy and only pay for the exact miles you drive.

Fitting the Box

The GPS box is installed behind your car’s dashboard, so nobody can see it. The cost of fitting the box is included in the quoted price.

  • When will it be fitted? The engineer will arrange a time with you. Usually this will be within the first 7 days; fitting should take no longer than an hour.
  • Where will it be fitted? Wherever suits you best. Just let the engineer know: home, work, college…
  • Who will fit it?A trained engineer will come to you at the agreed time. You will need to make sure your car’s electrics are working so that the engineer can test the box is working.

Frequently Asked Questions about Black Box Insurance

Can I get insurance on a provisional licence?

Yes.  We can offer cover for both provisional insurance and full licence holders aged 17 to 25.  We’ve teamed up with a panel of specialist insurers that offer different packages – based on the type of license you have. Call us on 0800 652 3799 and we can talk you  through the options available.

Will my data be passed on to any third parties?

Your driving data will not be passed on to any third parties other than your insurers, unless required for the prevention and detection of crime.

What happens to the box data?

The box is fitted to the vehicle to monitor how the vehicle is driven and over how many miles.

Your insurers may also use this data to adjust your premium should you exceed the annual mileage declared at the beginning of your insurance cover. As with many GPS devices, the box can also gather and record other useful pieces of data. This information is used if you need to top up your miles at renewal to make sure that you are still getting the best possible quotation.

Your insurers will be able to quote with an accurate record of your annual mileage, the type of roads you have travelled on (some roads are deemed higher/lower risk by insurers, such as country roads, dual carriageways) or give you a discount if your driving is extremely good.

I might need to use my car after 11pm

No problem – you’re fully covered 24 hours a day. We offer policies that do not restrict when you can use your vehicle. We also offer policies which give discounts for not driving between 11pm and 5am. You will be advised of all cover and restrictions at time of quotation before you buy a policy.

Do I still earn a No Claim Bonus?

Yes. When it comes to earning No Claims Bonus or No Claims Discount, this policy works no differently to any other insurance policy. On completion of a full term of young driver insurance (12 months) you will accrue one year No Claims Bonus which can be transferred to your next policy at renewal. This is subject to there being no fault claims during the life of the policy.

How many and what type of modifications are allowed?

We cannot insure any vehicle with modifications.

Will I be allowed to drive other cars?

This policy does not allow you to drive any other car. The only car you are covered to drive is the one shown on your certificate of insurance.

What if I do not own the car?

The policy is designed to allow young drivers (aged 17 – 25) gain their own No Claims Discount on their own vehicle. Hence, the insured (i.e. main driver) must also be the registered owner and keeper of the insured vehicle.

Can I insure my car in my parent’s name?

No. This is known as “insurance fronting.” This is illegal and is classed as obtaining insurance by deception. If the vehicle is solely or predominantly used by the young driver the policy must be insured in the main driver’s name. If the insurer finds out they are likely to cancel the policy or worse still, in the event of an accident, refuse to pay out.

However, there is a considerable discount for adding a parent (one other mature driver) as a named driver on your policy.  As long as the named driver is not over 70 years of age and is only a casual user this can make a huge difference to the premium.

Can I add my girlfriend/boyfriend on the policy?

Yes, but please be aware that the way they drive will be taken into account as the box tracks the car and not the driver.

Can parents also use the car that has been fitted with the box and how does the system know when they use it out of hours?

Parents can use the car provided that they have “driving any other vehicles extension” on their own insurance, alternatively they will need to be added to the insurance as named drivers (not main drivers).  As the box is fitted to the car, regardless of who is driving the box will monitor their driving.
